The driest, most comfortable window of the year: daytime highs around 30°C, nights near 21°C, only ~59–77 mm of rain a month, strong sunshine and the lowest humidity of the year.

Seawater is at its coolest, roughly 26–27°C. The northeast trades blow briskly but seas stay generally calm; with so little rain the coastal water is usually clear—great for a Malecón stroll or a sightseeing boat ride.

Humpback season is on: mid-January to late March is the official whale-watching window in Samaná Bay, a dedicated trip north from Santo Domingo. Sea-turtle nesting has not started yet.

A golden window climatologically—outdoor walks, sunsets and terrace dining all shine. It overlaps the Christmas–New Year high season, so book lodging and popular restaurants ahead; evenings can feel breezy, so bring a light layer.

Temperatures edge up to daytime highs of about 30.5–31.5°C. March stays dry, but May jumps to ~150 mm of rain as the wet season begins and afternoon showers return.

Water warms to about 27–28°C—swimming gets more pleasant—while wind and waves ease. Clarity is typically good around April; once the rain picks up in May, heavy runoff can temporarily cloud the water near river mouths.

Sea-turtle nesting begins (roughly March–October): females come ashore at night on protected beaches, mostly along the east and southeast coasts rather than the city waterfront.

A quieter, good-value season—especially March–April. In May plan outdoor stops for the morning and indoor ones for the afternoon. Crowds thin out after whale season ends in late March.

The hottest stretch: highs near 32°C, nights about 24°C, humid and muggy. The Atlantic hurricane season officially opens 1 June (6/1–11/30), and August rainfall peaks at ~195 mm with frequent afternoon thunderstorms.

Water reaches roughly 28–29°C and is calm for swimming. Summer is the peak sargassum window across the Caribbean—in some years southeast-facing beaches are affected, so check recent conditions before heading out.

Sea-turtle nesting peaks and hatchlings start emerging from July; coral spawning clusters around the August–October full moons (join a licensed night snorkel).

High value but the most weather-challenging season: skip the midday sun, mix in museums and galleries by day and head out again toward sunset—and keep an eye on tropical-storm tracks, especially in August.

September–October mark the historical peak of rainfall (~177–192 mm/month) and hurricane activity; November settles down. Daytime highs ease from about 32°C toward 31°C and the mugginess slowly fades.

Seawater peaks near 29°C, then gradually cools. For a day or two after a tropical storm or heavy rain, seas and near-shore water are at their roughest—best avoided. After mid-October storm odds drop markedly.

Turtle hatchlings keep emerging into late autumn as nesting winds down; humpbacks return to the northern bays only in December.

The key is avoiding the core storm window (September to early October): if you travel then, book flexible, refundable flights and hotels. From November the dry comfort returns—a smart shoulder season.
