This gallery gathers images of the square and its immediate surroundings in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo: the façade of the Alcázar de Colón, the arches of Las Atarazanas Reales and the atmosphere of terraces and live music at sunset.
Most shots were taken from the open space of the square, looking towards the Alcázar de Colón and towards the arches of Las Atarazanas. There are also frames of the surrounding cobbled streets, of the terraces lining the square and of the night-time lighting.
The centre of the square lets you frame the Alcázar de Colón straight on; from the steps by Las Atarazanas you get a diagonal view over the whole square. The side streets give tighter frames of the stone walls and colonial façades.
The last hour before sunset gives the warmest light on the stone façades; afterwards the night lighting and the busy terraces create the most characteristic atmosphere. At midday the light is harsh and the heat intense, so look for shade or indoor spaces.

From the centre of the square looking towards the Alcázar de Colón, and from the steps beside the arches of Las Atarazanas, which give a diagonal view of the whole ensemble.
The last hour before sunset, when the light warms the stone façades, and after the night lighting comes on. At midday the light is too harsh.
